Backyard event with a labor-intensive installation

Event Production, Project Briefs | April 1, 2013 | By:

A backyard tented wedding rehearsal dinner involved installing two flights of stairs.

Before his clients could walk down the aisle, Tommy Wilson and the crew from All Occasions Event Rental, Cincinnati, Ohio, had to walk down a couple of flights of stairs, along with everything required for a backyard tented wedding rehearsal dinner.

“It was a difficult load in and load out,” Wilson says. “We used a labor service to carry most of the items up and down the stairs so our crew would be fresh for the installation and removal.”

In addition to hand-carrying everything for the installation, the site required a subfloor system over the client’s pool and customized legs to go over a retaining wall. All Occasions installed an engineered steel truss system spanning the pool and covered it with the company’s standard decking. A 9-by-18-meter Losberger structure was installed over the pool. The tent and flooring went in on the first day of installation, and carpet and other items on the second day.

“We precut the uprights that went over the retaining wall so that wouldn’t slow down the installation process,” Wilson says. “Fortunately the tent wasn’t very large, so the installation itself was pretty straightforward.”

Despite the challenges, Wilson says he enjoys technical projects such as this one that offer the opportunity to create a unique space for his clients.

“The client was thrilled with the result,” Wilson says. “The property was completely landlocked, so this was the only space to host an event this size.”
