The Soap Box Derby is back by popular demand and ready to roll at the 2026 ATA Tent Expo, taking place January 27–29 at Margaritaville Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. After a thrilling debut at the 2024 Expo, the derby is now one of the most anticipated events on the Tent Rental Division (TRD) calendar, and for good reason.
A derby to remember
At the 2024 Tent Expo in Daytona, Fla., 16 teams made up of leading manufacturers and rental companies brought the heat—and some serious creativity—to the first-ever TRD Soap Box Derby. These gravity-powered racers, launched from a raised drop-gate ramp, showcased not only speed but innovation, branding and team spirit.
Each team’s vehicle reflected their company’s personality, complete with custom colors, logos and even product-inspired themes. Just lining up the cars turned into a show-stopping display, proving the derby was as much about flair as it was about fast finishes.
In a dramatic photo finish, Team EventQuip (#96) took first place, narrowly beating Team Tentske (#99) from
L & A Tent Rentals. Tent Mafia (#69), a powerhouse collaboration between Losberger De Boer, Keder Solutions, Mahaffey, All Occasions and CORT rounded out the top three.
More than just speed
While speed was key, the derby also celebrated creativity and team effort with a variety of award categories:
- Fastest: Team EventQuip (#96)
- Going the Distance: Team EventQuip–540.15 feet
- Best in Show: “Rolling Thunder” by Block and Roll (#12)
- Better Luck Next Time: Fred’s Tents (#13)
Fueling fun and connections
Held during breaks from educational sessions and networking events, the Soap Box Derby brings a fresh and energetic twist to the traditional trade show format. It’s a chance for teams to collaborate, blow off steam and connect with others in the industry all while celebrating the ingenuity that defines the tent and event rental world.
