Local ordinance bans air-inflated structures

Village trustees in Channahon, Ill., have introduced a new ban on air-inflated and air-supported structures, after a resident installed an air dome over his swimming pool, the Herald News reports.

Last summer, resident Dusty Cullen put an air-filled dome over his backyard swimming pool, in an effort to lengthen his family’s swimming season.

Village trustees say the dome could be dangerous, especially during storms. Attorney David Silverman said the trustees believe that air domes are banned under previous ordinances for tents and structures, but that the new ordinance makes it clear by stating that air-inflated and air-supported structures are not allowed within Channahon limits.

Cullen told the Herald News that he disagrees with the new ordinance. “We have the right to swim in our backyards,” he said. “We aren’t hurting anybody.”
