City built for oil spill responders

A “city” built for cleanup workers responding to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico includes large tents for dining and recreation.

A 32–acre site on Louisiana Highway 23 was cleared, drained, raised four feet and equipped with both tents and trailers to accommodate some 2,000 workers.

The Venice Responders Village passed parish and state inspections and was ready to start housing workers June 9. In addition to housing trailers, the village includes shower trailers, tankers of water for the showers, generators, outdoor lights, a wastewater capture system, onsite laundry drop off and pickup, a medical center and a landing space for helicopters.
