The focus on more playful decor is resulting in a new freedom to mix things up—table sizes, chair styles, linens, table cloths and even sashes and bows.

Couples are using a combination of round and square tables, rather than being limited to one shape or size; they’re throwing in lounge chairs, new chair styles, and trying out new stainless steel “highboy” tables, which don’t require tablecloths. Tabletops are sprouting color—in glasses, drops, and multihued linen placemats, including the new bengaline line that shimmers and picks up a range of other colors.

Stylists are tying sashes over chair covers or festooning the backs of chairs with ribbons for a more romantic presentation. Table decorations are matched accordingly.

“I see brides finally standing up to the establishment and doing what they feel they like,” says Crista Tharp, Tharp Events, Kokomo, Ind. “They don’t feel they have to follow Emily Post anymore—if they like purple and hunter green, they’re going to use them without apologies.”
