Discounted tents protect communities from sun

A new program in Australia is offering discounted tents for rent to organizations such as charities, sports clubs and schools, to help protect people from damaging sun rays.

The SunWise Shade Tent Lending program from Suncorp offers 10-by-10-foot and 10-by-20-foot tents to help create shade for communities near Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Bernadette Norrie, sponsorship manager for Suncorp, said research has found that shade can reduce a person’s overall UV exposure by 75 percent.

“This is a staggering statistic, considering the popularity of outdoor events and functions taking advantage of the sunny Queensland lifestyle,” Norrie told the Courier Mail.

The program requires organizations to have public liability insurance of AUD$10 million, and they must bring a copy of their policy when collecting their tent.
