Doing your homework is the only way to get the best software for your business. Utilizing the internet is one way to find out what you want to know. If a software company offers demos or tours online, take advantage of those.

Because you know a sales representative will be giving you a pitch, look for other opinions of the product. One way to do this is to ask questions in rental forums. The ARA has an active Web forum for members, and Rent Talk Online (renttalkonline.com) is a new, independent forum for the rental industry.

Likewise, don’t just take a salesperson’s word for it. If he says the software can do something, make him show you how it works.

If you’re not confident about your computer skills, then test the company’s customer service reps. Call them to see if they respond in an acceptable time frame.
